Traditional Chinese Medicine includes a range of treatments including Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, - including Cupping and Gwa Sha, Dietary Therapy, and Massage. Much of the philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine reflects the classical Chinese belief that the life and activity of individual human beings have an intimate relationship with the environment on all levels.
Chinese medicine practices are believed by many to be very effective, sometimes offering palliative efficacy where the practices of Western medicine fail or unable to provide treatment, especially for routine ailments such as flu and allergies, or when Western medicine fails to relieve patients suffering from chronic ailments.
Chinese Medicine also has been used to provide an alternative to otherwise costly procedures whom many can not afford, or which is not covered by insurance. There are also many who turn to Chinese Medicine to avoid the side effects of pharmaceuticals.

Does Acupuncture Hurt? Most people who have had acupuncture would describe it as virtually painless or far less painful than plucking out a hair. The sensations that follow range from nothing at all, to mild tingling, to slight numbness/achiness, to electrical pulsations in areas distant from the site of insertion. All these sensations usually subside once the needles are removed.
The needles used for acupuncture are much smaller that the standard hypodermic needle, do not draw blood and are solid, not hollow. They are tiny, just a little larger than a cat's whisker.
Acupuncture needles are inserted between the layers or cells of your skin. They do not puncture the skin or draw blood.
How deep do the needles go? Depth of insertion varies on the placement of the needle and the treatment type. For instance, Vanesza might use a needling technique that is different in fleshier areas. Typically, needles are inserted at depths ranging from 1/8" to 1 1/2".
What is treatment like? Where the acupuncture needle has been inserted, you may experience a vague numbness, heaviness, tingling or dull ache. Some people experience a sensation of energy spreading and moving around the needle - called Qi sensation. All of these sensations are good and a sign that the treatment is working. After treatment you may feel energized or feel a deep sense of relaxation and well-being. It is not unusual for patients to sleep during treatment. Usually patients leave in less discomfort and are more functional than when they walked in.

Cupping is a therapy used during Acupuncture treatment designed to stimulate the flow of blood and Qi within the superficial muscle layers. It is used for sore muscles, tension, neck pain and the common cold. In this therapy, Vanesza will place small glass cups over specific areas of your body. A vacuum is created under the cup using heat. They may be moved over an affected area or left in place.
Cupping will use heat to suck out those toxins and accumulated stress and tensions. The suction created through cupping method will loosen impacted nerve endings thus restoring them to their original state.
The essential oils applied on the skin and the rubbing action associated with cupping also provides an effective healing solution. Normally, your back will receive liberal amounts of oils during cupping sessions.
After establishing the cups on their appointed spots, Vanesza will run the cups along your muscles and nerve endings. The massaging action coupled with the suction technique can stimulate activity of health cells. This is made possible through the promotion of excellent blood circulation. With good circulation and healthy activity and growth of cells, your body immune system can effectively fight diseases. This then will lead to good health.

Gwa Sha is another technique used during acupuncture treatment used to release muscle tension, tightness and constriction. A specialized tool is used to gently scrape or rub the skin over a problem area. Gwa Sha feels a bit like deep massage.
In western terms, the scraping draws out blood and metabolic waste congesting the surface tissues and muscles, promoting normal circulation and metabolic processes. Gwa Sha is valuable in the treatment of pain, in the prevention and treatment of acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many acute or chronic disorders. |
